PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Well, the summer is almost upon us along with BVRI’s continuing efforts in Forest Management, the annual Community Picnic, ARC, and many other areas.
Since my appeal in the last newsletter for volunteers, we’ve had several members step forward. Thank you very much! However, we could still use more help for the yearly BVRI walk-around inspection of the subdivision, looking for violations of the CC&R’s, as well as, issues related to Fire Prevention or Safety. As a volunteer, you’ll be fully trained and all materials will be provided. So, please, if you’re available, please contact us through our website or any Board member.
Chuck Toeniskoetter has asked me to pass the word that he will be holding a series of informational meetings to discuss proposed developments within Bear Valley. In order to reach the maximum number of Bear Valley residents, Chuck currently plans to hold meetings in Bear Valley, Angels Camp/Murphys, and even Silicon Valley. As these meetings are scheduled, BVRI will keep you informed as to date, time, and place.
Have a great summer! Oh, and by the way, the word "giclee" in the raffle section is NOT a typo… I’ll leave it to you to research – I had to!!

Thanks and Regards …..
Brian Neth
President, BVRI

FORESTRY REPORT Dave Morley reports the following:" Now is the time to start thinking about thinning the trees on your lot this summer. By thinning the forest, we hope to stop the progress of the beetles as they attack and kill trees. We are also reducing the threat of a major fire in Bear Valley. Speaking as one who has had it done, I believe the trees on our lot will now be much healthier and our fire risk is reduced. Last summer, 36 lots were thinned and BVRI is hoping that many, many more get thinned this coming summer.

The first step in thinning your trees is to contact Ross Richards @ 209-736-4988 or rrrpf@sbcglobal.net and ask him to walk with you on your property and mark the trees to stay. Ross is a forester and charges $250 for this service. Ross will then contact Sean’s Tree Service who will then contact you and give you a bid for thinning the trees. From my experience, Sean does a fine job. He is very, very careful. He will have to move some equipment around on your lot so there will be some raking necessary after he completes his work.

Your reward in this process will be to choose the trees that will be taken out rather than let Mother Nature choose a tree that you don’t want removed. Your additional reward will be a much more fire safe home."

ARC REPORT ARC Chairman Ron Murphy reports the following: "Over the winter months your Architectural Review Committee approved, for construction, one remodel application for a home on Cub Lane, and some minor repair/re-paint-re-stain requests. There are three new home plans under current review: one in the Granite Vista development, one on Snowshoe Road and one located on a flag lot between Quaking Aspen and Bear Valley Roads.

The home approved for construction several years ago on Monte Wolf Road (that was uncompleted) remains in review. The Alpine County Building Department is requesting that the structural engineering of the home be updated to current building standards, delaying resumed construction until next summer.

A home that was repainted without ARC approval is under penalty review by the BVRI Board of Directors. Reminder: It is the responsibility of the property owner to request and obtain ARC approval prior to construction or any other exterior changes to a home. This includes re-paint or re-stain, re-roof, re-model, propane tank covering structures. Prior review and approval will avoid possible fines and fee increases, as well as having to dismantle unapproved construction.

The ARC members encourage you to contact them and let them assist you through the review and approval process. ARC members are: Ron Murphy (Chairman), Terry Woodrow, Gary Willard and Chuck Taylor. They can be contacted through the BVRI website @ (www.bvri.org).

The 37th Annual Bear Valley Music Festival is Coming Soon!

UPDATE FROM THE BEAR VALLEY MUSIC FESTIVAL TEAM:

The Bear Valley Music Festival has been hard at work to finalize this year's program. The dates this year are July 29 through August 13 and we promise to deliver an outstanding program for all! On opening night, July 29th, we will host The Temptations at 7pm. Come over and enjoy singing to all your old favorites like "Papa was a Rolling Stone," and "Can't get Next to You."

Other wonderful performances will be this year's opera Madam Butterfly which will have ornate and beautiful costumes, top singers from all over the U.S. and will be one of the best operas the Music Festival has produced in years. Additionally, we will be celebrating Mozart's 250th Birthday with a night dedicated to his music, the recent Silver Medalist from the Van Cliburn Competition, Joyce Yang, will be performing Wagner and Tchaikovsky. And don't miss a very special performance from renowned singer Daniel Ebbers who will perform with the orchestra, The Britten Serenade.

Another exciting event for the Music Festival is this recent addition to the program: John Corbett will be here with his band on Thursday, August 10. You might know him as Aidan from Sex and the City, Chris from Northern Exposure or even the lovable boyfriend in My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Check out his band's songs on his website, http://www.johncorbettband.com/.

We are still confirming the last slot in the program, so be sure to stop by the office and pick up the latest print out of the lineup. The website is up-to-date at: http://www.bearvalleymusic.org/ and the official brochure is available now.

PLEASE SUPPORT THE MUSIC FESTIVAL

Bear Valley Music Festival planners are in great need of donated housing during the festival. This year we are sponsoring the Adopt a Musician program so that folks who donate their house will know exactly who they are helping during the Music Festival. The donation of housing goes towards your overall donation total and will impact the level in which your donation appears in the program. Donating housing is easy, and we take care of the details. As a thank you, we will provide housing donors with two tickets to a performance of their choice. Thank you for all the support...Bear Valley is truly unique!

With Your Help, Tennis is Coming Back To Bear Valley!

The Bear Valley Tennis Club is in high gear as we move toward spring time. You may have noticed they had the trees removed from the site last fall, and plan to go forward with the construction of four tennis courts on ACUSD property adjacent to the ball field in 2006.

Before construction can be done, the Tennis Club needs help from the community. They are selling a limited number of lifetime memberships in order to raise money for construction. There are still memberships available for purchase at the charter rate of $600/family. This rate will be extended to only 39 more families so now is the time to purchase your lifetime membership.

With your help, the Tennis Club will bring tennis back to Bear Valley so you can enjoy courts, clinics, tournaments and tennis-related fun for years to come. Charter member applications are available at the Bear Valley Sport Shop and the Bear Valley Adventure Company.

Ebbetts Pass Scenic Byway Update

After more than four years of effort, California State Route 4 between Arnold and Markleeville was designated as a National Scenic Byway by U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta. Ceremonies to announce the designation took place at Union Station in Washington D.C. A delegation was on hand to represent the Byway, including Supervisor Terry Woodrow of Bear Valley; Michelle Plotnik, Chair of the Calaveras Council of Governments; and George Dondero, Executive Director of Calaveras COG.

"Both counties can be proud of the great natural wonders along this beautiful stretch of highway, and there is no doubt the designation is deserved. Having National Scenic Byway designation tells travelers everywhere that Ebbetts Pass is a travel destination worth seeking," said Supervisor Woodrow.

The Federal Highway Administration bestows this prestigious recognition upon selected highways across the United States which are deemed to have special and unique characteristics that set them apart. There are only six designated National Scenic Byways in California, with Ebbetts making the seventh. Ebbetts Pass was the only nomination from California to receive the designation in 2005.

Criteria for selection include exceptional qualities in any of six categories: scenic, natural, recreational, historic, archeological, and cultural. Nominations must have completed a Corridor Management Plan accepted by the local jurisdictions. A plan was developed over a three year period, and was adopted unanimously by the Boards of Supervisors in both Alpine and Calaveras Counties in August 2004.
